HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance : Clear Liquid ( < 50 Apha).
Warning ! : Causes respiratory tract irritation. May cause digestive tract irritation. Irritant. May be harmful if swallowed. May cause methemoglobinemia. May cause central nervous system effects. May cause cardiac disturbances. May cause Kidney and liver damage. Causes eye and skin irritation.
Target Organs : Blood, Kidneys, Central nervous system, liver, cardiovascular system, blood forming organs.
POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS
Eye : Causes eye irritation and possible burns. May cause chemical conjunctivitis.
Skin : Causes skin irritation and possible burns.
Ingestion : May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May cause liver and kidney damage. May cause cardiac disturbances. May cause methemoglobinemia, cyanosis, convulsions, and death. May cause central nervous system effects. May be harmful if swallowed.
Inhalation : May cause methemoglobinemia, cyanosis, convulsions, tachycardia, dyspnea, and death. May cause liver and kidney damage. Central nervouse system effects may include confusion, ataxia, vertigo, tinnitus, weakness, disorientation, lethargy, drowsiness, and finally coma. May cause cardiac abnormalities. Can produce delayed pulmonary edema. Exposure may produce metabolic acidosis. Causes severe respiratory tract irritation with possible burns.
Chronic : May cause liver and kidney damage. May cause methemoglobinemia, which is characterized by chocolate-brown colored blood, headache, weakness, dizziness, breath shortness, cyanosis, rapid heart rate, unconsciousness and possible death. Effects may be delayed.

Section 4

FIRST AID MEASURES
Eyes : Get medical aid immediately. Do not allow victim to rub or keep eyes closed. Extensive irrigation is required (at least 30 minutes).
Skin : Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse.
Ingestion : Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid. Do not induce vomiting. If conscious and alert, rinse mouth and drink 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water.
Inhalation : Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If breathing is difficult, give Oxygen. Get medical aid. Do not use mouth-to-mouth respiration. If breathing has ceased apply artificial respiration using oxygen and a suitable mechanical device such as a bag and a mask.
Notes to Physicians : Treat symptomatically and supportively. For methemoglobinemia, administer oxygen alone or with Methylene blue depending on the methemoglobinemia concentration in the blood.
Antidote : Methylene blue, alone or in combination with oxygen is indicated as a treatment in nitrite induced methemoglobinemia.

FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
General Information : As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas. Container may explode when heated. Combustible material; may burn but does not ignite readily. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution.
Extinguishing Media : Use water spray to cool fire-exposed containers. Do not get water inside containers. For small fires, use dry chemicals, carbon dioxide, or water spray. For large fires, use dry chemicals, carbon dioxide, alcohol-resistant foam, or water spray.
